So my dvd drive on this computer acts differently and is located in a different place than on my acer computer. I have windows 10 and jaws 18. I put a disk in the d drive I think it is called, and wonder how to get it to play for me. I have some music on the disk.

I’ll give you one way, but remember, you can do this several.
Press the windows key.
In your search box type this PC. It will say it before you finish.
Using your arrow keys up down left right, you will find your drive under devices and drives.
After that, it works just as always.
Once you find it, you can put a shortcut on your desktop.
If you need instructions, or wish to do so, say, and I’ll post that, or someone will.
This works the same on all brands and models.

you can also simply open the program that you love the most for playing media, e.g. Winamp or Windows media player, or some other stuff, and get to the play option, or the CD option, or play media option, (depending on what software) and follow the promp from there. usually, the cd will play by itself ones you insert it to the machine, or a pop up window asking you want you want to do with the CD ones your system detect it.

Windows 10 has that feature off by default.
Microsoft has decided the automatic what you want to do feature is a security rishk, so now you have to act on it.
I'm not sure if some computer makers have it on however, but Dell doesn't by default.
I liked it too, because all you needed to do was put the disc in.

So how do you turn it on again for the disk to play automatically? I have someone coming in on Tuesday because the disk drive seems like it wants to jam and this is a new computer.

In the search box type control panel.
Under that, find hardware and sound
Under that, arrow to AudoPlay.
Tab and when you are on the combo box for the thing you want, use your arrow keys to set it on how you want it to behave
Tab to okay, and you’ve got it.
While you are in that section, adjust them all as desired.

Also, I suspect your drive is fine.
Newer computers, mine in particular, the drives are slower to pop, and require you to press the button and hold it for a little more then you normally did.
On my laptop, I sometimes need to press a bit firmer to get the tray to open, but it doesn't just pop either.
Both are Dell.
I wonder if you're is same?
You'll know this shortly though.
Smile.

Even if you have a Del that mimic's a mac form like I do, it takes a second for the external Blue ray to open when its connected to two USB ports.

Surprising. The drive is defective and will be replaced. Doesn't have power; no wonder I couldn't open it. The first time I tried it, the thing opened a tiny bit. I do have a del warrantee for 2 years so guess I will use it. Need somebody to install it so the vendor may be the guy to do it unless he gets del involved. Don't know yet.

Ah, you never said it wouldn't open at all.
Laughing.
That's different?
Why won't the guy that came out install it after the part is received?
Or Dell for that matter? They have in home service?
You should check with both?
Seems whoever came out should have told you he'd replace it?

It's going to be replaced tomorrow. Del is coming out. Vendor should have tested this further before he brought it I think. How this got missed I don't know.

Well, I'd agree, however, these drives aren't used anymore for installing programs and such, so that could be a reason it wasn't tested.
Your vendor simply never needed to use it, so was lazy in his work.

Oh, and if you read this before your Dell tech visits, have him/her set your drive so it works as you desire.
When the new one is installed, it will need to be reconfigured, so it will be easy to just have it done.

so if I get a jaws upgrade I need that drive like I did before right? I am tempted to get a thumb drive and learn how to use that too.

Post 15 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 01-Jun-2017 18:59:19

Nope. As I explained, programs are just downloaded anymore. You can install Jaws from FS's website. You currently have it running, so upgrading it is just a download away if you are speaking of going to say version 19.
However, if you are just updating Jaws from the current version of 18 to the next, you simply go to help, then check for updates and follow the prompts. No disc drive required.

Defective drive. It was replaced and I made sure I was inserting the disk right. The drive is not flat like my other one was. It jumps right into reading a disk now and I don't have to search for it except to write the words my computer. Thanks for the help.
